Is this about sex, intimacy, or your relationship?

That’s what my practice is for — and only that. If you’re looking for individual counseling about something else, I’m not the right therapist, and I’d rather say so now than three sessions in.

Even if you’re certain you’re the problem.

A lot of people arrive having already decided the trouble is theirs alone:

  • “I’m the one who doesn’t want sex.”
  • “I’m the one with pain.”
  • “I’m the one with the sexual dysfunction.”

Or you haven’t raised it with your partner yet. Or you’ve raised it and you’re fairly sure they’d never agree to come.

Here’s the thing I have to be straight about: I work with couples. Both of you. That isn’t a preference about how I like to spend an afternoon — it’s that you can’t lift sex out of the rest of a relationship and treat it on its own. The sexual problem shapes how the two of you are with each other, and how you are with each other feeds straight back into the sexual problem. Work one side of that alone and it rarely holds.

If your partner won’t come, or you’re not certain they would, that’s worth saying out loud rather than working around. It sometimes shifts once there’s an actual appointment on offer instead of a vague suggestion. But if individual therapy is what you’re really after, I’m not your person — and the next screen will point you at people who are.
